Leeches are segmented worms that belong to the phylum Annelida and comprise the subclass Hirudinea. Like other oligochaetes, such as earthworms, leeches share a clitellum and are hermaphrodites. Leeches breathe through the skin. One family of leeches is known to have external gills. However, gas exchange usually occurs at the body surface where oxygen is absorbed.
